This app can be the foundation for a positive behavior program, teaching not just anger management, but positive pro-social behaviors.   It is intended to be used with the guidance of a teacher or mental health professional, not by the child alone.

 how it works

It's normal for children to have strong emotions when they are young,  but  some children have specific difficulty in controlling their impulses and  handling frustration.  They may react quickly without thinking, have trouble expressing their feelings with words, and lack self-calming skills..  The good news is that emotional regulation skills can be learned. With the right techniques, they can learn to recognize the early warning signs of losing control over their feelings, they can learn how to calm their bodies, and they can learn how to solve problems that cause their frustration. The Cool the Volcano app can be the starting point for teaching lifelong skills that help children succeed in all areas of their lives.

Teach Kids to Identify Anger Triggers

The app asks children to identify the situations that typically cause them to lose their anger. It helps teach problem-solving skills to use when difficult situations occur.

Teach Kids Self-Calming and Coping Techniques

The app includes 4 interactive tools that can help with impulse control and regulating strong emotions.

Children Earn Badges As They Practice New Behaviors

Kids love games and earning rewards and this app is filled with incentives to learn better ways to handle their anger. Kids earn points and get badges from playing a 'Lava Dodger" arcade game,  practicing relaxation exercises, and completing real-life missions where they exhibit positive behaviors and self-control.

Missions Make the Difference

Missions come in 5 different areas:  recognizing body changes when they get upset, using self-calming techniques, learning to pause emotional reactions, problem solving, and reacting appropriately when an anger outburst occurs to make amends and rebuild relationships.

A Complete Emotional Regulation Toolkit

Children don't change overnight, but the app is designed to teach a wide variety of anger control and emotional regulation techniques. The app also  includes a dozen printable worksheets that  adults can download and print to reinforce and expand the  techniques introduced in the app.

Please note:  Cool the Volcano is a web app and will work on a phone, tablet, or computer. However, because the data is stored on the device, you should stick to one device to maintain the point system.

The Program Starts with A Game That Teaches Kids to Avoid Triggers and Use Coping Technqiues

Kids love games, so we decided to make an arcade-style game to help children think about how to use coping skills and avoid the triggers that can cause an emotional outburst.  If they get hit by the lava rocks from the volcano, they lose points.  Landing on a landing on a coping technique (which flashes on the screen) gives them points towards their reward. Points in the game are added (or subtracted) from the behavioral point system.

Missions Encourage Kids to Use New Positive Behaviors

Change has to happen in the real world, and the app send children on a variety of missions to practice their emotional regulations. Each completed technique earns the child points towards a reward.

The Cool the Volcano app was developed to be used directly with children.  The app let's you treat up to 10 children and naturally keeps all their data separately you can easily come back to it.

You can use the app with children on a phone, tablet, or computer so your tools for helping children are always just a few clicks away. Data is stored only on your device (not the cloud) for security, but that also means you must stick to the one device once you start using it.
